Ella,
The Girl Who
Made a Difference.
By: Megan
There once lived a girl named Ella, who wanted to help the earth. Ella enjoyed the little pleasures in life, like the color of a butterfly’s wings, or the quiet trickle of the creek in her yard. Every day you could see Ella play outside, rain or shine. She will be watching a bird build a nest, or watching the tiny minnows swim by, or laying in the grass watching the world go by.
One Day she was listening to the music made by the blue bird perched in her tree, when suddenly the lovely music made by the bird was cut off by ugly music. Music Ella called “unreal music”. For, Ella believed that real music came from the world around us and in us. She found out that the music was being made by her older brother, Luke, and his friend, Alex, listening to the new invention called the radio. Although Ella was hurt by this, she hated to argue more, so she went to her room and shut the door, blocking out the horrid sound of the ugly music. She watched the clouds from her window.
Later at dinner Luke was telling her Dad about the new way to hear music anywhere as long as you are walking outside. But, in order to do that, they had to poison the earth which would cause ALL the birds to die, but the government didn’t care they said “Birds, big deal, there are better things than that”. All they had to do was poison the earth and then when you tapped your feet in a certain way, you can listen to your favorite song. Ella loved music but weren’t they going too far? Ella also found out that the poison will affect the air they breathe. It won’t kill them, but it kills birds, and Ella thought killing birds was just the same as killing people.
Later as Ella lay outside she thought, I need to stop this, but I’m only a girl growing up in the early 1900’s she thought what can I do? Suddenly she
remembered a book she read. In it Leonardo, the hero, had said “No matter who they are anyone can make a difference.” Ella then knew she could do it. The only question was how? And if you really think about it, how is many many big questions all together.
As Ella was pondering on this question, a thought came to her. She would sneak into the president’s office when they took their trip to Washington D.C.
A couple of weeks later, they were taking a tour of the White House. Ella’s plan was to when they pass the president’s office she’d tell her parents to go ahead and she’ll catch up when she pretended her shoe was undone and then go into the office. She would tell the president how she felt about it and if he wasn’t there she had a letter to put on his desk.
Ella told her parents she’d catch up when she was done with her shoe, so far so good. She walked into the president’s office, Mr. President was there. “Can I help you?” he asked. “Sir” she said weakly, then she told all she had prepared. She ended with “I love music but aren’t you going a bit far with it?” Ella waited finally Mr. President said, “I never meant to sign that into law. There is a way to stop this, sign here and here on these papers and your address on this one so I can write to you to tell you what happens”. “Thank you Sir!” Ella shouted. She did as he asked and left.
Days & days Ella waited for the letter. One day a letter came for her from the president it read:
Dear Miss Ella Eleam,
I am please to inform you that congress has decided not to
make the Law 2781 a law after all. I thank you for your help and
hope you are well.
Yours Truly, Mr. President
Yes! The birds were saved! She did it! Now if you saw Ella she would be listening to birds, and you would have never guessed she saved all the birds in the world. She made a difference.
